,

So, you’ve just booked your trip and want to know the best places to go in Santa Barbara, CA. This charming town is a refreshing retreat with quaint shopping centers, dreamy hotels and stunning Spanish architecture. With so much to offer, what should you add to your vacation itinerary?

Today I’m sharing the best spots I visited on my recent SB vacation. It was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken. I was enchanted by the California sunshine, delicious food and eclectic shops.

Most of my recommendations are located on or near State Street, the most popular area in town. Keep reading for all the details.

Entertainment

Arlington Theatre

Dating back to 1931, the Arlington Theatre is a where you can step back into history. It’s the largest movie theatre in Santa Barbara where you can still catch a film or live performance. If nothing else, you should at least pass by. I recommend visiting at sunset when you can see the neon lights and marquee.

Try to make it inside to see the lobby. It’s an open air courtyard where you’ll be surrounded by towering arches and ornate tilework plus the peaceful sound of the water feature. If you love history, this local landmark is one of the best places to go in Santa Barbara.

State Street

Most of the shopping and dining can be found along State Street. It runs through the middle of town connecting downtown Santa Barbara to West Beach and Stearns Wharf. You’ll want to visit the downtown end of the street past Highway 101. This is where the best dining and shops are located.

Standout picks include The Cruisery bar, the Veracruz House and MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation.

Places to Stay

Hotel Californian

Stop at the Hotel Californian to see quintessential Santa Barbara architecture. From outside, you’ll see big beautiful archways that contrast against the blue sky. Inside, you’ll see luxe, contemporary spaces in the hotel’s various bars, eateries and cafes.

It’s located on State Street in Santa Barbara’s “Funk Zone” – a concentrated area of wineries and cellars. So you can plan a day where you visit a couple of these spots and stop by the hotel to take some good-looking photos.

Kimpton Canary Hotel

Here’s one of the places to go in Santa Barbara where you can get dressed up and have a glam night out. The Kimpton Canary Hotel is iconic for it’s sophisticated atmosphere. I recommend booking dinner at Finch & Fork restaurant where the menu is fresh (and fancy) with seasonal ingredients.

Restaurants & Cafes

Carlito’s Café y Cantina

Grab a seat on the patio here to soak in the sun and munch on chips and guacamole. I actually went on Cinco de Mayo, so the place was decked out for the occasion. The food at Carlito’s is authentic and tasty, plus the customer service is a standout.

The Lark Santa Barbara

Now, its time for wine and dinner at The Lark Santa Barbara restaurant. An extensive wine list and fresh California-style plates make this a must-do stop. Its located in the Funk Zone arts district, known its art galleries and tasting rooms. So after dinner, you can explore a nearby art showcase or boutique.

Santa Barbara Public Market

Don’t miss this food hall that features various merchants providing locally-sourced options. If you’re traveling with a group, Santa Barbara Public Market is a great stop where everyone can choose what to eat. It’s got options including Mexican dishes, noodle bowls, stone-fired pizza and more.

Shopping

La Arcada Plaza

Your trip has to include a stop at La Arcada Plaza – a massive open-air shopping center that perfectly fits the Santa Barbara aesthetic. This collection of locally-owned businesses is where you’ll find those one-of-a-kind little shops that are tons of fun to explore. There’s no shortage of cafes and treat stores there too so plan to spend a few hours here.

Paseo Nuevo Shopping Center

Finally, Paseo Nuevo is where you’ll find a mix of your favorite retail stores as well as smaller boutiques. You can grab a lunch or a quick drink and snack at places like Pressed or 805 Boba. I loved all of the details on the outside of the buildings and intricate tilework featured throughout.

Conclusion

Altogether, a Santa Barbara weekend getaway is perfect for your next girls trip with endless shopping, luxury restaurants and entertainment to enjoy. Whether you’re visiting for a birthday trip, bachelorette party or family celebration, you’ll have a great time exploring.
